The Speaker announced that the House do now recess. The next meeting is scheduled for approximately 3:30 P.M. today.

The House received a message from the Clerk. The Clerk transmitted to the House a facsimile copy of a letter received from the Honorable Ruth Johnson, the Michigan Secretary of State, indicating that, at the Special Election held on November 6, 2018, the Honorable Brenda Jones was duly elected Representative in Congress for the 13th Congressional District, State of Michigan.

ONE MINUTE SPEECHES - The House proceeded with one minute speeches, which by direction of the Chair would be limited to 15 per side of the aisle.

ADJUSTED WHOLE NUMBER OF THE HOUSE - Under clause 5(d) of rule 20, the Chair announced to the House that, in light of the administration of the Oath of Office to the gentlewoman from Michigan, the whole number of the House is 433.

ADMINISTERING THE OATH OF OFFICE - Representative-elect Brenda Jones presented herself in the well of the House to take the Oath of Office administered by the Speaker of the House.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - The Chair designated Mrs. Lawrence to lead the Members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

SPEAKER'S APPROVAL OF THE JOURNAL - The Chair announced that he had examined the Journal of the last day's proceedings and had approved it. Mr. Poe (TX) demanded that the question be put on agreeing to the Speaker's approval of the Journal and by voice vote, the Chair announced that the ayes had prevailed. Mr. Poe (TX) objected to the voice vote based upon the absence of a quorum and the Chair postponed further proceedings on the question of the Speaker's approval of the Journal until later in the legislative day.
